Struggling Detroit car manufacturer General Motors has posted further drops in car sales, ceding its position as the world’s largest car manufacturer for the first time in 77 years. The US auto giant said fourth quarter sales for 2008 had fallen by 11 percent.

Toyota, the Japanese automaker, passed General Motors in car sales globally in 2008 for the first time in 78 years, The Associated Press reports. GM says it sold 8.356 million cars and trucks in 2008, falling about 616,000 vehicles short of Toyota’s total of 8.972 million, the AP reports.
